EU support expected in further motorway construction

Podgorica, (MINA-BUSINESS) – Minister of Transport and Maritime Affairs Osman Nurkovic has said that the Government expects the support of the European Union in the next phase of implementation of the Bar-Boljare motorway development project, which was defined as one of the priorities at a ministerial meeting of a block of European countries and China, held in July.

He met today with head of the EU Delegation to Montenegro, Aivo Orav, to discuss the major infrastructure projects in the field of transport, and the details related to the pace of their implementation.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Transport and Maritime Affairs, the European Union also sees the Bar-Boljare motorway as one of the priority projects in the Western Balkans, within the zone of a corridor connecting the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean.

Nurkovic reminded that, after an indicative extension of TEN-T network in 2015, the Bar-Boljare motorway, as a part of the SEETO Route 4, was an extension of the Middle East – Eastern Mediterranean corridor to the Western Balkans.

“We expect the support of the EU Delegation to Montenegro in order to ensure that the call for expression of interest in the development of other sections has reached as many European companies whose presence we find very important as possible,” said Nurkovic.

Orav said that the EU spent €35 million a year in Montenegro, adding that the transport infrastructure projects account for a considerable portion of these funds.

The two officials expressed readiness for further improvement of cooperation, and underlined the importance of the development of human resources as an important factor in the EU accession process.
