Ulcinj Saline nominated for third Ramsar area in Montenegro

Podgorica, (MINA) – The Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism has put forward nomination of the Ulcinj Salina for the Ramsar area, the third wetlands in Montenegro of international importance.

This decision came after the Ulcinj Saline was declared protected area-the Nature Park, at the Ulcinj local parliament’s session on 24 June, on behalf of the government of Montenegro.

“According to the Protection Study, which was done during the process of declaring the Saline the Nature Park, it meets six out of nine criteria for being registered in the international Ramsar list of wetlands of international importance”, the press release stated.

Ramar list is the largest world network of protected areas, with over 2,200 Ramsar areas, covering more than 2.1 million square kilometers globally.

There are currently two Ramsar areas in Montenegro: the National park Skadar Lake and Tivat Saltpans.
