Government will not increase salaries in public sector, says PM

Podgorica, (MINA) – The Government will not be buying social peace by increasing salaries in the public sector without a real economic justification, Prime Minister Dusko Markovic has stated, arguing that salaries in the public sector are quite decent.

Markovic was answering MPs’ questions in the Parliament on Wednesday.

SDP MP Rasko Konjevic asked the PM if he things that the salaries in the sectors of education, healthcare and security, which employ 31,000 people, are adequate to provide for a decent quality of life for those employees and their families.

“The budget of the Healthcare Fund has increased by 56 million in the past three years, and still there are no increases in salaries. Where is the money?” Konjevic wondered.

The PM replied that the salaries are as high as they can be without imposing new tax burden on businesses and citizens, while explaining that the government will not incur new debts in order to cover for expenditures.

Markovic underlined that the economic growth seen in the past two years cannot be seen as justification for additional expenditures, including salary increases in the public sector.
