Tajani: Montenegro to join EU in seven years

Podgorica, (MINA) – Montenegro is the first in line to join the European Union and it should happen in seven years, President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani has stated.

He said that the door of the EU remains open for Montenegro.

“Despite the challenges facing the EU, such as the elections next year, Brexit or the migration crisis, the enlargement policy remains topical,” Tajani told TV Montenegro.

The EP President sees Montenegro as the frontrunner in the integration of the Western Balkans and expects it to become the next EU member state by 2025.

“I believe that it will be possible for Montenegro to become a fully-fledged member in seven years, if we work hard by that time. We have elections for the European Parliament next year and it is true that we need to work on the stability of the EU, but at the same time we must work on enlargement as well. Montenegro is the first in line for membership and I’m an optimist,” Tajani said.

He said that he agrees with Milo Djukanovic’s statement during his recent address at the European Parliament in Strasbourg that the stability of the Western Balkans is critical for the future and prosperity of the EU.

Tajani noted that Montenegro plays a key role for the stability of the Western Balkans, which according to him is important for the stability of the Union.
