NPCG has not preference for any protection model

Podgorica, (MINA) – The National Parks of Montenegro (NPCG), as the interim management authority for the Ulcinj Salina, has no preference for any of model of protecting the Salina, and will respect any agreement reached as a consensus among the stakeholders, the company has stated.

“By the end of this month, the Ulcinj local assembly is supposed to convene in order to reach a final decision about the legal status of the Salina as a permanently protected area,” the NPCG told Mina.

The NPCG recalls that the question of protecting the Salina was one of the key preconditions for the opening of Chapter 27 – Environment and Climate Change in the EU accession talks, and that based on an environmental protection study produced with the support of EU experts two optimum scenarios have been developed for the categorization and future protection of the area.

“This issue will be on the agenda of the Ulcinj Assembly towards the end of this month and we have reason to expect that the Salina area will be formally and legally protected. This will be a final solution for this issue,” the NPCG said.

According to the statement, the company has been working to protect the biodiversity of the Salina in line with the annual management program for this area, following the guidelines of the Ministry for Sustainable Development and Tourism.
