No progress in regard to domestic violence against children

Podgorica, (MINA) – There is no progress in Montenegro regarding domestic violence against children in comparison to the situation from five years ago, MICS survey presented in Podgorica on Friday showed.

According to the press release, the survey that Monstat carried out in 2018 with technical assistance of UNICEF, and financial aid of the government, UNICEF and UNHCR, clearly indicates the fields which must be further addressed.

“In particular the areas of early childhood development, children protection, education, health and clean environment”, UNICEF’s press release stated.

The last time this survey was carried out in Montenegro was in 2013.

“The percentage of children younger than two who were breastfed during the first hour following delivery has grown from 20 to 41% among the Romani population and from 14 to 24% among the general population”, the press release stated.

Those are, according to UNICEF, only some of the key findings of the MICS Survey carried out in Montenegro in 2018.

“The results show that progress has been achieved in some areas in comparison to previous such survey carried out in 2013, and indicate the areas which need further improvement, such as increasing the breastfeeding rate in our country”, the press release stated.

UNICEF representative for Montenegro Osama Khogali congratulated to Montenegro for being the first Balkans’ country to carry out the new cycle of MICS survey, and praised the constant progress Montenegro is achieving in the area of exercising the rights of a child.

He recalled the areas that need further improvement: “2018 MICS survey does not show any progress in regard to domestic violence against children in comparison to the situation of five years ago”, Khogali emphasized.

He remarked that around two-thirds of children aged one to 14 are exposed to at least one form of psychological of corporal punishment by their parents.

Deputy PM Milutin Simovic said that this survey confirmed progress in 20 sustainable development indicators.

“We are in particular satisfied with the increase of the reach of children in the pre-school education, which grew from 40 to 53%”, said Simovic.Longer version of article is available on a link MINA ENGLISH SERVIS
