Montenegro vows to reach renewable energy goal

Podgorica, (MINA-BUSINESS) – Prime Minister Dusko Markovic has said that Montenegro will reach and exceed the ambitious national goal related to the share of renewable energy sources in the final consumption until 2020, without giving up its title of the ecological state.

Opening a ministerial meeting on transition of the Western Balkan countries to clean energy, he said that Montenegro’s energy sector shared the main features of the single European power industry.

“Montenegro is already certain it will reach and exceed the ambitious national goal for the share of renewable energy in the final consumption by 2020. We pay a high price for this, but remain confident that the validity of this bold commitment will be confirmed in the medium term,” said Markovic.

European Commissioner for Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn said that regional dimension was a key to the transition to clear energy sources.

“I would like to highlight the potentials offered by the regional market in terms of improvement of competitiveness,” Hahn said.

He reminded that the EU’s goal was to cut energy consumption by 25 percent until 2030, and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent in the same period.
