Montenegro needs true unity based on state independence

Podgorica, (MINA) – Instead of a fictitious reconciliation, Montenegro needs a true unity based on the undeniable independence of the state and respect of its legal order and political system, DPS MP Dragutin Papovic has stated.

“That is the best way of relaxing the political relations and a precondition for a more diverse, more decent and better political system,” Papovic stated in his opinion piece.

The MP argues that the topic of reconciliation has been discussed almost since the restoration of the multi-party system in Montenegro.

“That is a nice phrase, but no one has ever explained what it means,” Papovic said, adding that the supposed reconciliation is being contrasted with political and identity differences, which are viewed as weaknesses.

“The reality is the other way around. The existence of political and identity differences is logical in the democratic, multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-cultural Montenegrin society. The political and identity differences are a necessity, not only in Montenegro, but in almost every country,” said he.

The MP argues that there is nothing wrong with differences and that differences are desirable and that their alternative is not a reconciliation, but a single-party system and a uniform identity.

“The point is not to annul or reconcile political and identity differences, but to make sure that they become a source of cooperation. But that involves a number of realistic preconditions,” Papovic noted.

He claims that if all political stakeholders in the country accept that state independence, the Constitution and civic society with different identities are a framework for political cooperation then differences can play a positive rather than negative role.
