Podgorica, (MINA) – Investigative journalism can contribute to changes that are necessary to Montenegro, and the journalists who are dealing with that kind of journalism should get the status of officials, it was heard during the conference which took place in Podgorica.
CEDEM held the press conference presenting the results of the project “Improving the practices of local media in fight against corruption and organized crime”, financially supported by the US Embassy in Montenegro.
CEDEM project coordinator Marko Pejovic said that the goal of the project is contribution to Euro-Atlantic integration of Montenegro, through increased quality of credibility of investigative journalism in the field of corruption and organized crime.
Pejovic remarked that guidelines for investigative journalists dealing with corruption and organized crime have been made within the project, aimed at all journalists aspiring to deal with the investigative journalism in those two areas.
Speaking about the recommendations, he emphasized that it is important to direct attention to improvement of safety of investigative journalists locally, and giving them the status of officials.
“Self-censorship and censorship are two very important problems the journalists face, and which are very pronounced, and thus it is necessary to have independent editorial policy of the media outlets, in particular when speaking about public broadcasters”, said Pejovic.
He argues that it is also necessary to improve the material status of journalists and continue education of journalists at all levels. Longer version of article is available on a link MINA ENGLISH SERVIS
