Contribution to boosting border security

Podgorica, (MINA) – The agreement between Montenegro and the European Union (EU) on the activities carried out by the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) will contribute to improvement of border management and joint fight against illegal migrations, the Ministry of the Interior (MUP) stated.

The agreement was initialed in Brussels on Tuesday by Minister Mevludin Nuhodic and EU Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos.

“The agreement will contribute to improvement of border security and joint fight against illegal migrations, and thus to better protection of our borders from all forms of crime”, Nuhdzic told a press conference following the meeting.

According to Nuhodzic, one of the priorities in the EU Enlargement Strategy on the Western Balkans is the strengthening of operational and strategic cooperation in the field of border security.

“Thus Montenegro continues to coordinate its migration and border management policies with Brussels policies”, he emphasized.

He said that Montenegro, as an EU candidate country, with only one chapter remaining to be open, fully shares the security challenges with its partners and remains committed to the common European security policy.

Avramopoulos, according to the Interior Ministry’s press release, thanked to Montenegrin government for its efforts in timely implementation of all procedures for initialing the status agreement between Montenegro and the EU on Frontex activities.

The challenges we face are common and the only way to address them is by working together”, Avramopoulos emphasized.

He said that Montenegro was part of the European family, and added that the region should work together on combating all forms of crime.
