Podgorica, (MINA) – If the Democrats would change the decision not to participate in the work of the Committee for Reform of Electoral and Other Legislation, it would be important for the further dialogue, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has stated.
SDP MP Rasko Konjevic underlines the importance of establishing the Committee, while recalling that there are no Democrats’ representatives in it.
“I will remind you that, with the support of Commissioner Johanes Hahn, the Democrats initiated a dialogue on the reform of election legislation and reinforcement of trust in the election process. Basically, the agreement on the dialogue was achieved owing to the text of the agreement that they offered to the public and the EC, which was supported by the EU, and now they refuse to participate”, Konjevic told Mina.
He said that there is not a single issue that the Democrats presented to the public in their Plan, that hasn’t been included in the Parliament’s decision.
“Commissioner Hahn called upon all democratic and pro-European stakeholders to join the dialogue. Unfortunately, with their policy of self-sufficiency and stopping communication with almost all political subjects, the damage has been done to the whole democratic process”, Konjevic stated.
He believes that constituting a two-third majority in the Parliament that would allow for the implementation of the agreement is more important than the number of the members in the Committee, adding that he believes that the Democrats will realize that it is better to be part of the dialogue that is supported by the European partners and that they will change their decision.
“Since the EU and Commissioner Hahn support the work of the Committee, I am hopeful that the Democrats will change their mind and become part of the process, since several months ago they themselves emphasized that they had the support of the EU and Commissioner Hahn. Now Commissioner Hahn supports the dialogue and the formed Committee”, Konjevic stated.
Konjevic believes that the change of the Democrats’ decision would be important for the further dialogue.
According to him, support by the international partners is important.
He believes that failure to solve that problem could slow down Montenegro on its European path.
“Therefore, the dialogue is a necessity and there is no alternative to it. By establishing the Committee, the Government finally acknowledged what was obvious, but what it had refused to acknowledge for a long time, that there was an institutional crisis and a lack of trust in the election process”, Konjevic said.
