Few media programs for children

Podgorica, (MINA) – There are just few media programs for children in Montenegro, especially those that include them in the production, which calls attention to the necessity for strengthening the capacities of media outlets in terms of that, UNICEF representative Jelena Perovic said.

Within the media literacy campaign “Let’s choose what we watch”, carried out by UNICEF and the Agency for Electronic Media (AEM), a survey was carried out on the national sample of parents and children aged 9 to 17.

Perovic told Mina that, according that survey, less than one third of the parents, 29%, and children, 27%, believe that there is enough programs suitable for the children in Montenegrin TV programs.

The survey further showed that most children find media contents on the Internet or through foreign cable TV channels.

“Those data clearly indicate that there is a need for improvement of the quality of Montenegrins media content for children”, said Perovic and added that for that reason they organized two trainings for Montenegrin media on this topic.

Answering to the question on the respecting of children’s rights by media workers when covering the stories about children or when producing media contents intended for children, Perovic said that Montenegrin media sometimes violate children’s rights when reporting, in particular in the crisis situations.
