Divisions in Montenegro created 100 years ago, PM argues

Podgorica, (MINA) – Divisions in Montenegro were not created by the current government, but rather 100 years ago, Prime Minister Dusko Markovic stated in the Parliament on Tuesday.

As part of the Prime Minister’s Questions, he was asked by Demos MP Miodrag Lekic whether he was aware of the moral decline of the state, deep socio-economic rift in the population and the increasing disintegration of the society on ethnic grounds.

Markovic replied that the values of Montenegro and the whole region saw a degradation in the last decade of the 20th century.

“Montenegro made little contribution to the bloody decade of the Balkans, but even though we saved our country and our people from war, conflicts and bloodshed, we could not avoid facing the numerous consequences which also affected the system of values of the society,” Markovic said.

He remarked that it was only after the restoration of its independence that Montenegro could take its destiny in its own hands.

“That was the key precondition to stop the spiral of moral degradation,” Markovic stated.

He underlined that Lekic was no help in this historical achievement.

“Quite the opposite, you did your best to challenge the May referendum. Luckily you did not succeed,” the PM concluded.

Markovic said that he disagrees that the moral downfall of the state continues, recalling that the proof of Montenegro’s restored and solidified system of values is NATO membership, frontrunner role in EU integration.
