Judicial reform brings concrete benefits to citizens and businesses

Podgorica, (MINA) – The outcomes of the judicial reform in Montenegro include much more efficient courts and significantly reduced number of backlog cases, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice Zoran Pazin has stated.

He addressed in Tirana on Thursday the EU-Western Balkans Forum of Ministers of Justice and Interior Affairs.

In addition to the ministers of justice and interior of the countries of the region, the Forum was also attended by officials of the EU member states and senior representatives of European institutions, including EU Commissioner for Justice Vera Jourova and EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Dimitris Avramopoulous.

According to a government press release, Pazin noted that in the course of implementation of the current judicial reform strategy Montenegro has visibly improved all aspects of its judicial system.

“He announced that the objectives of the new judicial reform strategy for 2019-2020 would include further rationalization of the judicial network, measuring of workload for judges and the time of proceedings, reducing the number of backlog cases and further alignment of the judicial practice with the case law of the European Court of Human Rights,” the press release stated.

During a separate meeting with Jourova, Pazin expressed his appreciation for the support received for Montenegro’s accession to the EU Justice Program.

“Montenegro’s participation in that Program, whose budget is €378 million, will enable the Montenegrin judiciary to have closer cooperation with the judicial systems in the EU Member States and will ensure more solid guarantees for the protection of the rights of Montenegrin citizens in the entire European judicial area,” the press release stated.
