Vote on same-sex partnership bill postponed once again

Podgorica, (MINA) – The Montenegrin parliament has postponed once again voting on the Bill on Life-Long Partnership of the Same Sex Persons, since there was no majority for passing that act in the parliament.

Democratic Party of Socialists MP Nikola Rakocevic said that postponing of the vote is requested since they are convinced that they can find a majority for passing the law among the MPs that protect fundamental human rights.

“We hope that the time we will thus gain would be enough to talk with our coalition partners and the opposition MPs, making them realize that those are not political or partisan interests, but the interest of the civic Montenegro, which cannot be achieved if the rights of all the citizens are not equal”, Rakocevic said during the parliament’s session.

The Law would enable to same sex couples in Montenegro to exercise all the rights that heterosexual couples enjoy, omitting the possibility of adopting children.

LGBT Forum Progres president Bojana Jokic said earlier that the Law on Life Partnership of Same Sex Persons is important for the LGBT community, but also for Montenegro on its path of Euro-Atlantic integration, and called on the MPs not to offer only declarative support to it.

Danijel Kalezic of Queer Montenegro said that support to that law should not be the subject of calculations.
