Podgorica, (MINA) – Montenegro is looking to protect and improve environment, in order to preserve its natural wealth for future generations, Director General for Environment Ivana Vojinovic has stated.
At the presentation of the manual entitled School Network in Protected Areas, she said that several declarations of protected areas are being considered, including the first maritime protected areas.
“Nature has always been Montenegro’s core value and it will remain the country’s key trademark globally,” Vojinovic said.
According to her, the current network of protected areas in Montenegro covers 13 per cent of its territory, most of which comprise the five national parks.
“Since, a few days ago, we obtained a new protected area, the Ulcinj Salina, the surface area of the protected land has been extended,” Vojinovic stressed.
She argues that, when it comes to the protection under international agreements, Montenegro has placed 20 per cent of its territory under protection.
“An initiate to place the Zeta River under protection has already been put forward by the local authorities in Danilovgrad and Podgorica and there are also initiatives to protect certain areas at sea,” Vojinovic explained.
