Risk assessment dubbed key in combating terrorism

Podgorica, (MINA) – National assessment of the risk of money laundering and terrorist financing will represent the foundation on the basis of which Montenegro will strengthen and improve the entire system for the fight against those crimes.

This was heard at a workshop on National Risk Assessment of Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing.

Minister of Finance Darko Radunovic stated that the National Risk Assessment is becoming increasingly important, because it involves all the authorities included in the fight against corruption and organized crime, but also the private sector and the society as a whole.

He underlined the importance of establishing and solidifying the links between all relevant states authorities, while also working to strengthen the public-private partnership.

According to the Finance Minister, the campaign against economic crime in Montenegro is expected to help to protect democracy, rule of law, security of citizens and businesses and the overall stability of the national legal system, through the prevention of money laundering and terrorist financing.

Head of the Cooperation Section at the EU Delegation in Montenegro Hermann Spitz noted that corruption, money laundering and terrorist financing undermine the rule of law, public trust in democratic institutions and sustainable economic development.

“Therefore, the fight against those threats is a priority both for the EU and for Montenegro. The EU responds strongly to the threats and risks of money laundering and terrorist financing,” Spitz said.

Head of the Council of Europe program office in Podgorica Angela Longo stated that the fight against economic crime leads to a greater security of citizens and the protection of Montenegro’s financial interests.

“Regular assessment of compliance with international standards needs to be made. We wish to help you develop the National Risk Assessment and we would like you to understand the methodology and the way of allocating resources in the right way,” Longo said.
