Belgrade, (MINA) – If Montenegro would join the EU soon that would be excellent news for Serbia, Secretary General of the Regional Cooperation Council Goran Svilanovic has stated.
Commenting on the applause that Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic received at the European Parliament, Svilanovic told the Belgrade daily Danas that his hope was that it also meant support for the Montenegro’s accession to the EU in the near future.
He added that it would be excellent news for Serbia as well.
Svilanovic recalled that Serbia and Montenegro are seen as the two most advanced countries in the EU accession talks and that Montenegro has opened 31 out of 33 negotiation chapters.
The RCC official remarked that one should be careful when forecasting a possible accession date, because the final decision will be made by some future MPs and some future European Council.
He also noted that the Sofia Summit promoted the position that internal EU reforms should precede any decision on a possible enlargement.
