Montenegro confirms its commitment to promote world peace

New York, (MINA) – Montenegro confirms its commitment to continually promote the world peace and equality among people, Prime Minister Dusko Markovic has stated.

He spoke at the Nelson Mandela Peace Summit at the UN General Assembly, in honor of the centenary of the birth of the Nobel laureate.

“During the breakup of Yugoslavia, despite the challenges and conflicts in the region, Montenegro preserved internal stability and opened its borders to hundreds of thousands of refugees and displaced persons, which was naturally a challenge for our country, which is a tolerant multicultural and multiethnic society,” Markovic noted.

The Prime Minister remarked that the former president of South Africa is a true hero of the modern age and a man who, in times of most difficult challenges after the Second World War, found the strength and wisdom to change the world and make it a better place.

“The challenges of the present day have been more complex by the growing populism, leading to the divides in modern society that threaten to undermine security and peace and even their very survival. I believe that it is only with a strong joint response, further determined strengthening multilateralism, as a synonym for agreement among peoples and nations and a symbol of universal solidarity, that we can ensure that progress,” Markovic stated.

In order to achieve that goal, the PM argues, the world needs efficient and effective United Nation which, by promoting the sacred values of peace, justice, human rights and equality, provide a stable footing for individual hopes and aspirations.
