Montenegro committed to strengthening freedom of media

Podgorica, (MINA) – Montenegro has been committed to strengthening of media freedoms and freedom of expression, which are the foundations of a democratic society, on which values Montenegro sees its European future, said Minister of Culture Aleksandar Bogdanovic.

Speaking at the global conference on media freedoms in London, he said that the European Commission has recognized the legislation regarding electronic visual media with implementation of European framework as “good level of legal alignment”.

According to the press release from the Ministry of Culture, Bogdanovic said that owing to complete decriminalization of defamation and insult, Montenegro achieved standards of media freedom.

Bogdanovic stressed that since the opening of the EU negotiations, the government bought debts of commercial broadcasters in the amount of €7 million, which is, according to him, another example of supporting development and protection of media pluralism.

“By creating necessary conditions for freedom of media and sustainability of self-regulation, the government at the same time provided a three-year long transparent and independent model of financing of self-regulatory bodies, which will be recognized as the compulsory support to internal and external self-regulatory bodies by new legal solutions”, Bogdanovic underlined.
