Law should unite rather than divide, says EU spokesperson

Podgorica, (MINA) – Regulation of national symbols should be done in a way that will unite rather than divide the Montenegrin society, the European Commission has stated.

EC Spokesperson Maja Kocijancic has said that the European Commission is aware of the amendments to the Law on National Symbols put forward by the Montenegrin Government.

She told Vikend Novine that, although regulation of those issues falls under national competence, it should still be done in a way that will unite, rather than divide the Montenegrin society.

Kocijancic underlined that it is important for the Montenegrin legal framework to create conditions for efficient exercise of freedom of expression.

“That is a fundamental value of the European Union and a key element of Montenegro’s EU accession process,” the EU official said.

Prime Minister Dusko Markovic stated earlier that the Government will insist on the proposed amendments to the Law and that everyone who disrespects state symbols will be fined.
