Podgorica, (MINA) – It is in the interest of all countries of the region for the Residual Mechanism, as the successor of the International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia, to complete its mission, Deputy Prime Minister Zoran Pazin has stated.
He hosted on Wednesday Chief Prosecutor of the Residual Mechanism Serge Brammerz.
According to a government press release, Pazin expressed Montenegro’s readiness to contribute to bringing to justice all those responsible for war crimes, through full cooperation with international institutions and countries of the region.
He remarked that the weight of the war crimes committed in the former Yugoslavia in the late 20th century is still burdening the coexistence of different ethnic and religious communities in the region.
“We must not allow for new generations whose future we see in a united Europe to remain hostages of this difficult stigma. It is, therefore, the responsibility of all countries of the region and the international institutions such as the Residual Mechanisms to fully investigate and individualize the guilt for the war crimes and to bring those responsible to justice,” Pazin stated.
He welcomed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Residual Mechanism and the Montenegrin Supreme State Prosecutor’s Office.
Brammerz is said to have welcomed the quality of cooperation between the Residual Mechanism and Montenegro, while adding that the international community highly appreciates Montenegro’s openness and constructive role towards full investigation of war crimes and strengthening of peace and security in the region.
