Podgorica, (MINA) – NATO membership means extended area of stability in the Western Balkans and reduces the space for activities of those who oppose the values of the Euro-Atlantic family, said Minister of Foreign Affairs Srdjan Darmanovic.
Darmanovic, who attended in Washington the NATO ministerial meeting which marked the 70th anniversary of the alliance, said for the Voice of America that the region is becoming more stable as the membership zone expands.
He believes that Serbia will have to decide at one moment where it wants to go.
Darmanovic added that, unfortunately, for now, there is no progress in regard to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s NATO aspirations.
The Montenegrin head of diplomacy stated that it is very important that the North Macedonia is another country in the Balkans on the path of NATO membership- expecting also this country’s move forward on the path towards the EU.
One of the challenges that the NATO and EU countries face are the tense relations with Russia, and Darmanovic believes that Russia will remain a burning issues for a long time.
According to him, there are not only misunderstandings with Russia, but there is also dialogue.
“We hope that the dialogue will prevail for once, but NATO must be ready for a credible dissuasion strategy, which was the essence of its activities in the Cold War, when the Soviet Union existed”, Darmanovic concluded.
