Agreement possible in the final phase of negotiations

Ljubljana, (MINA-BUSINESS) – Slovenian economist Mojmir Mrak believes that the agreement on the use of the common European currency in Montenegro could be expected in the final phase of the EU accession negotiations, depending on the macroeconomic situation and the state of the public finance.

“An important specific feature of Montenegro’s EU accession negotiations is related to Chapter 17 – Economic and monetary union, and I don’t want to speculate on how this specificity will be regulated to allow Montenegro to formally use the euro when the country did not have to meet Maastricht criteria,” Mrak told Mina-business agency.

He believes that the agreement on this matter will be reached in the final phase of negotiations, depending on the stability of macroeconomic situation in Montenegro and its public finance.

“We have to bear in mind that some of the EU member states that wanted to join the euro were not accepted because they had not completely fulfilled certain Maastricht criteria,” said Mrak.
