Electricity price hike is a serious business barrier

Podgorica, (MINA-BUSINESS) – According to the Montenegro Business Alliance (MBA), the announced decision to raise electricity price once again is unacceptable, regardless of the category of population it will affect, as high electricity costs are becoming a serious business barrier in Montenegro.

“Is there an end to electricity price hikes in Montenegro? Not only is this business barrier persistent, it is becoming an increasingly serious obstacle to the development of business sector in Montenegro,” the Alliance says in a press release, adding that already low living standard of Montenegrin citizens is additionally affected by the growing price of electricity.

MBA warns that, if the same trend continues, some businesspeople and many citizens will not be able to meet these liabilities.

“Are we going to allow to have houses and flats in the dark because their owners cannot afford unrealistically expensive electricity? People have been receiving electricity bills exceeding one half of their monthly income for a long time now,” the MBA says, asking how it is possible to work and produce in such conditions.

The press release says that, as the first market-oriented business association in Montenegro, MBA supports the principles of commercial practice, which are not observed in this case.

The Alliance believes that this is a clear case of monopolistic behaviour.
