High school students mostly use social networks online

Podgorica, (MINA) – Montenegrin high school students mostly use social networks online, and every tenth student does not read at all, the survey carried out by the CEMI on behalf of NGO Juventas has shown.

The survey showed that 93% of the respondents uses the Internet on daily basis, and social networks are used by 90% of them.

TV program is watched by 51% of the high school students on daily basis, while more popular among this population are online sites for watching movies and TV series.

Almost all high school students use social networks, out of whom 9 out of 10 use them on daily basis, while most of them use Instagram (90% of the respondents).

The results of the survey showed that print media are not popular among the high school students.

“Up to 57% of the respondents use social networks for informing, which proves that this channel is taking over this role, either by directing them to online portals, or by having information placed directly to social networks by media outlets”, Juvenats stated.

They added that online portals are read daily by every fourth respondent, while every tenth high school students never reads books.

“Only one third of the respondents read daily or two to three times a week, while on the other hand 27% of them reads books once a month”, the press release stated.

NGO Juventas stated that, by analyzing the data on media usage, it could be concluded that high school students predominantly get informed by social networks, TV or online media.

“Since social networks and online portals are the key polygons for spreading fake news, propaganda, spin and click baits, media literacy among the youth should be directed towards enabling them to recognize manipulation in this area”, Juventas stated.

The survey was carried out in the period between 10 January to 14 February via online questioner among one thousand respondents within the project “Improving Media Literacy in Montenegro” carried out by Juventas and Mina news agency, with the support of the US Embassy in Montenegro.
