Podgorica, (MINA) – The Montenegrin Justice Ministry requests from Serbian colleagues to extradite Svetozar Marovic for serving the prison sentence to which he was convicted in Montenegro.
According to the Ministry’s press release, all legal conditions for Marovic’s arrest in Serbia and extradition to Montenegro had been met even before the request was filed, once the Interpol international wanted notice was released.
The Ministry reiterates that in cases of extradition of other persons that Montenegro requests those extraditions from Serbia are done regularly and timely.
“However, the circumstance that Svetozar Marovic has been moving freely and showing up at public places in Serbia during the last two years, despite the red Interpol notice, made the Justice Ministry file, without any further waiting for Marovic’s arrest, the request for his extradition”, the press release stated.
The Ministry expects that filing request for Marovic’s extradition will additionally motivate Serbian authorities to meet their international obligations, arrest Marovic and extradite him to Montenegro.
The Justice Ministry has also forwarded to the competent organs of Serbia a letter of request by the Basic Court in Kotor requesting that Milos Marovic serves in Serbia the one-year prison sentence to which had been sentenced in Montenegro.
The letter of request ensued after the Basic Court in Kotor was informed by the Interior Ministry that Milos Marovic lost Montenegrin citizenship, since he was allocated Serbian citizenship.
In line with the international agreements, Serbia is not obliged to extradite its own citizens sentenced to less than two-year prison sentence to Montenegro.
“The decision of the relevant organs of Serbia to grant citizenship to Milos Marovic, convicted for organized crime, is indicative and allows him to avoid serving the prison sentence in the country in which he committed a capital crime”, the press release stated.
Additionally, as stated, the Justice Minister has on several occasions, both through direct communication with the Serbian officials and publically, expressed Montenegro’s expectation that Serbian police authorities will meet their international responsibility and arrest persons from the Interpol red notice list and allow their extradition to Montenegro.
