Podgorica, (MINA) – Every fourth journalist in Montenegro said that they had been exposed to pressure and/or blackmailed into doing something different to what they felt was right, while three fourths said they had not been exposed to such pressure, the Damar polling agency has found in a survey.
The survey on the perception of citizens and journalists about state of play in the Montenegrin media reveals that almost every second journalist, who was exposed to pressures or blackmail, said that those pressures came from the subjects of their reporting, while every fifth journalist said that the pressures came from editors or centers of economic and political power.
“Almost every second journalist or editor said that they resorted to self-censorship seldom, while 39% never experienced self-censorship. Every tent respondent said that they resorted to self-censorship often or very often,” the survey noted.
The field research was done in June on a sample of 1,000 adult citizens and 136 journalists and editors from 11 media outlets.
According to the survey, the biggest problems facing the media in Montenegro include poor financial situation and low living standards of employees, media polarization, lack of self-regulation, large number of media outlets in a small market and a lack of integrity, credibility and knowledge of journalists and editors.
