Montenegro potentially ready for EU membership by 2025

Podgorica, (MINA) – With strong political will and sustainable progress, Montenegro could potentially be ready for EU membership by 2025, the European Parliament has noted in its Resolution about the European Commission’s report on Montenegro.

While noting Montenegro’s good overall progress in the EU integration process, the MEPs also called on political leaders to focus on addressing the problems in the areas of rule of law, media freedom, corruption, money laundering, organized crime and its associated violence.

The resolution, which was passed with 484 votes in favor, recognizes Montenegro’s efforts towards constructive regional cooperation and good bilateral neighborly relations.

The MEP welcomed the ratification of state border agreement between Montenegro and Kosovo and called for the resolution of outstanding border disputes.

The text underlines the strategic importance of Montenegro’s accession to NATO on 5 June 2017 for securing stability and peace in the Western Balkans.

The MEPs also welcomed the European Commission’s assessment that with strong political will, with delivery of real and sustained reforms, Montenegro could potentially be ready for membership by 2025.
