Brussels, (MINA) – A majority of citizens in the European Union are against further enlargement in the coming years, while the citizens of the EU candidate countries are still supporting of EU membership, the European Commission’s latest Eurobarometer survey has revealed.
The survey, which also includes five EU candidate countries, shows that 45% of Montenegrin citizens describe EU membership as positive.
In Serbia, 42% of citizens believe that EU membership is a good thing, 22% believe it is bad, while 28% are undecided.
As many as 93% of Albanians describe EU membership as good, while only 1% have a negative attitude.
Likewise, the idea of their country joining the EU is supported by 58% of Macedonians and 35% of Turks.
In the EU, however, 43% of citizens support further enlargement of the Union in the coming years, while 45% are against it.
The greatest support for enlargement is seen in Spain (71%), Poland and Lithuania (66%), Romania (65%), Hungary (62%) and Croatia (61%).
