Halting enlargement process is not answer to EU’s problems

Podgorica, (MINA) – The EU’s need to remove the sources of crisis it is going through is understandable, but halting or more serious slowing down of enlargement process is not an answer, said Parliament Speaker Ivan Brajovic.

During the panel discussion dedicated to the EU and its neighbors in the Conference of Speakers of the EU Parliaments held in Vienna, he said that enlargement policy is the strategic path for Montenegro, the region and Europe in general.

Brajovic said that he understands the need of the EU to remove the sources of crises and perform the process of internal consolidation, but that the answer to the problems is not halting or serious slowing down of the enlargement policy.

“On the contrary, we believe that the process of EU consolidation and the accession process of the new member states that share the same values are two complementary processes since they are mutually conditioned and must be carried out simultaneously if the Union wants to be stronger, more efficient and more attractive alliance for the existing and new members”, said Brajovic.

He, as stated from the parliament, emphasized that postponing of the integration for some better times bears danger from various political influences which are in contrast with the EU strategic goals.

That would, Brajovic believes, bring to weakening of Euro-enthusiasm of the candidate countries and create conditions for strengthening of forces that cherish anti-European values.
