Decline of trust in electoral process

Podgorica, (MINA) – The trust in the electoral process among the citizens of Montenegro has declined, the survey carried out by CEMI has shown.

The results of the public opinion survey Citizens’ Trust in the Electoral Process, carried out by this NGO on the sample of 1,054 respondents in the period between 25 March and 8 April, has been presented on Thursday.

Based on the data this survey revealed, a bit more than half of the respondents, 52.6% of them, expressed satisfaction with functioning of democracy in Montenegro.

Nikola Zecevic of CEMI said that most of the respondents, 57.4% of them, said that corruption is present in the political system, while this percentage grows to 86% among the members of the opposition parties.

He added that 40.3% of the respondents have trust in the institutions tasked for implementation of the elections, which is the progress in comparison to the last year when 35.4% of the respondents had trust in the electoral process.

42.9% of the respondents believe that parliamentary elections 2016 were fair and free, and 33.5% of them gave a negative answer.

Regarding the forthcoming elections, 42.1% of the respondents believe that the elections will be free and fair and 15.8% of them believe that it will not.

The survey showed that more than half of the respondents, 52.7% of them, believe that the opposition parties should return to the parliament, while 19.9% of them support the boycott.

CEMI Executive director Nikoleta Djukanovic said that more than half of the respondents believe that it is necessary to legally envisage the responsibility of the parties to have a registry of their members.

According to her, level of information among the citizens about the electoral process and the functioning of the parliament is not on high level.

“Only 32.1% of the respondents knows that majority system for election of the MPs is being used, 13.8% of them that there are 81 MPs in the Parliament, and only 9.4% knows that census in at 3%”, said Djukanovic. Longer version of article is available on a link MINA ENGLISH SERVIS
