Domestic products face strong competition

Podgorica, (MINA-BUSINESS) – According to the Chamber of Commerce (PKCG), domestic food producers are faced with a strong competition of foreign companies, which is why they expect the support of the state in improving the position of the local gastronomic products in the tourism industry, as well as in the strengthening of their competitiveness.

“We import a lot of products for the production of which we have both comparative advantages and installed capacities, which is why the domestic food production faces a strong competition of foreign products,” the PKCG told Mina-business agency.

The entrepreneurs are aware that they need to increase the scope of their production and offer high-quality products with competitive prices in both local and foreign market but, because of a strong competition of foreign products, they need the assistance of the state in order to improve their position in the local market and their competitiveness.

“Montenegro’s foreign trade is characterized by its high reliance on import and a growing deficit, which is particularly true for trade in food, which is directly related to the growing tourism industry demand,” the PKCG says.

The Chamber says that this requires more food to be imported during the summer, as the installed capacities often cannot meet the tourists’ demands, which is evident from the fact that around one-quarter of the food import takes place in July and August.
