Respecting other’s opinions is foundation of tolerant society

Podgorica, (MINA) – The active approach of all parts of the Montenegrin society, but also networking of student and education structures, is important for challenging the elements which bring to extreme ideas, it was concluded in the public debate.

The lecture “Dialogue in the community- prevention of radicalization and violent extremism”, organized by the Center for Civic Education (CGO), was attended by the students of high School “Beco Besic” from Plav.

Historian and associate on CGO’s programs Milos Vukanovic stated that official education system in Montenegro still has not tackled challenges of introducing Montenegrin multi-cultural and multi-confessional society.

He recalled the concerning results of a surveys which showed that a number of the youth stated that they would not marry a person of different nationality.

Plav municipality president Mirsad Barjaktarevic outlined that the attitude of the state towards an individual is one of the most important factors in preventing development of radicalism and extremism, but also that the state’s purpose is mirrored in its readiness to protect every individual.

According to him, in order to prevent, or at least ameliorate dangerous radical behavior, it should be put on the margins of the society.

Madrasah “Mehmed Fatic” Headmaster Fuad Cekic explained that religion does not comply with the expression ‘tolerance’, “since it means to put up with someone, and the God did not create the world to tolerate each other, but to get to know each other”.

Balkan Insight editor in-chief Dusica Tomovic emphasized frequent abuses of the terms radicalism and extremism in media, which are equalized with differences, which do not threaten anyone’s rights.
