Podgorica, (MINA) – Combating violence against women demands action, determination and multidisciplinary approach, said EU Delegation to Montenegro’s representative Plamena Halaceva.
Speaking at the opening of the conference “Violence against women- Application of Istanbul convention and resistance to retrograde processes”, she said that it was the issue of education, legislation, positive examples of empowered women who succeeded in saying ‘no’ to violence.
Halaceva stressed out that the first step towards empowering is recognizing that women are not a “vulnerable group”, since this term only increases stereotypes and inequality.
“Violence against women should not be observed as a phenomenon that effects an isolated group, but as a threat to safety of the half of world population and to global economy”, said Halaceva.
She also stressed that the EU is considerably the biggest investor in establishing gender equality and change globally.
Halacevs said that Montenegro was among the first Council of Europe member countries which signed and ratified the Istanbul convention.
“In the last year’s report, we praised Montenegro for aligning the Criminal code with the Istanbul convention, and in our November non-paper we noted the increase in number of criminal charges in gender based violence cases in last year, which could signal increased trust of the victims to report violence”, said she.
