Podgorica, (MINA) - The Constitutional Court has rejected as unfounded the constitutional appeal filed by former Supreme Court president Vesna Medenica against the detention order following her conviction, noting that the courts had justified the existence of flight risk in a constitutionally acceptable manner.
The Constitutional Court announced that, by a majority of votes, it was assessed that the Podgorica High Court and the Appellate Court, deciding in regard to the flight risk, gave exhaustive, interconnected and concrete reasons that go beyond mere formality, first of all starting from the fact that Medenica had been sentenced to ten years in prison in first instance.
According to the Constitutional Court, the courts paid special attention to the fact that Vesna Medenica’s son, Milos Medenica, who was also convicted in the first instance in the same procedure, is currently at large and that there is a realistic danger of helping her hide.
The Constitutional Court stated that the allegations claiming the detention was influenced under the public influence and political pressure are not acceptable, as they were not supported by concrete evidence indicating a lack of independence or impartiality of the courts.
