Enlargement to be in focus of new Brussels administration

Podgorica, (MINA) – The EU will be complete only with Western Balkans accession, and thus it is important that the EU enlargement remains among the priorities of new Brussels administration, with the support by the EU member states.

It was heard at the conference “Current situation in the EU and Future of the EU Enlargement Policy” that took place in Podgorica.

Hungarian embassy in Montenegro organized the conference in cooperation with the Hungarian Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade, during which, within two panel discussion, the results and the future steps of Montenegro in the EU negotiations process were discussed, as well as the previous enlargement experiences.

The meeting was open by Hungarian Ambassador to Montenegro Jozsef Negyesi, who emphasized that the topic of the conference cannot be more current than it is today, the General Secretariat of the government stated.

Chief Negotiator Aleksandar Drljevic emphasized that the enlargement policy is recognized in the history of the EU as one of the key mechanisms for strengthening the unity, European spirit and cooperation and cherishing diversity.

Western Balkans countries, Drljevic added, believe that their future is in the EU, even if the EU itself is burdened with many issues, such as immigration, security or populism movements.

Ministerial Commissioner Brexit in the Hungarian Foreign Ministry Szabolcs Takacs emphasized that the EU is not compete without this region.

He said that Montenegro and Serbia have achieve a lot in comparison to other countries. We heard during the panel discussion that Serbia and Montenegro are the leaders of the process, but I would say- Montenegro and Serbia”.
