Nurkovic: Srebrenica Genocide is a moral defeat of humanity

Podgorica, (MINA) - The genocide in Srebrenica is not only a tragedy for one nation or one state, but a moral defeat of humanity and the gravest crime committed after the Second World War, said Parliament Vice-Speaker Mirsad Nurkovic.

He made this remark in the Parliament at the opening of the exhibitions “Stories from Srebrenica” and “Childhood at War: Drawings from Srebrenica”, marking July 11, the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the Genocide in Srebrenica.

According to the press release from the Parliament, Nurkovic pointed out that “the genocide in Srebrenica goes beyond history and remains a permanent test of humanity’s conscience”.

Nurkovic stressed that it was the first time that the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the Srebrenica Genocide was organized in the parliament, but that it was not the first time that this crime was discussed in this highest legislative chamber.

“He recalled that, by adopting the Resolution on the genocide in Srebrenica, the Parliament of Montenegro clearly confirmed that the truth cannot be relativized and that the dignity of the victims must not become the subject of political calculations”, the press release said.

Minister of Justice Bojan Bozovic pointed out that the genocide in Srebrenica represents one of the deepest wounds in modern European history and a reminder of a crime that international courts have unequivocally classified as genocide.

He emphasized that no responsible society should relativize, minimize, or deny established facts.

Representative of the Srebrenica Memorial Center Almir Salihovic recalled that more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys were murdered in this genocide.

Speaking about the exhibition “Stories from Srebrenica”, he pointed out that it speaks about people and their lives through personal belongings and testimonies, reminding that the victims are not statistics, but people with families, plans and dreams.

Bosniak Party MP Kenana Strujic Harbic said that it is concerning that, despite the judgments of international courts, extensive evidences and the UN Resolution, there are still attempts to relativize and deny the genocide in Srebrenica.
