EU Delegation: Process of amending the Constitution must be completed without delay

Podgorica, (MINA) – The EU Delegation in Podgorica has called on all political actors, especially the Parliament, to complete without delay the process of amending the Constitution in line with European standards and recommendations of the Venice Commission (VC).

The EU Delegation told Vijesti that it welcomed the initial parliamentary vote on constitutional amendments, which was secured on Tuesday by the broadest possible political consensus.

“This is not only an important institutional milestone, but also a clear political signal of Montenegro’s ability and determination to implement the reforms necessary for decisive progress in the final stage of EU accession negotiations”, the Delegation said.

They pointed out that the amendments were prepared following extensive consultations and in agreement with the European Commission (EC) and were designed to strengthen the protective mechanisms for judicial independence and fully align Montenegro with European standards and recommendations of the VC.

The Delegation stated that completing of the procedure for adopting the constitutional amendments is one of the key final benchmarks in the accession process and will be a decisive indicator of Montenegro’s political commitment to its European future.

The head of the EU Delegation in Podgorica, Johann Sattler, told TV Vijesti that 74 votes in favor of launching the procedure for constitutional amendments is a clear signal that there was broad agreement on major issues, including EU accession.
