Podgorica, (MINA) – It is time for Montenegro to become a strong, European country, Montenegrin President Jakov Milatovic said, adding that by initiating the drafting of the accession treaty, a clear message would be sent that the country reaffirms its European ambitions with actions, not words.
According to a press release from his cabinet, Milatovic met on Monday with President of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, during her visit to Montenegro.
The meeting took place at the Mount Lovcen, which they reached by a cable car from Kotor, sending a message that Montenegro, a blend of sea and mountain, tradition and modernity, is entering the final phase of its European journey.
“The interlocutors discussed reforms bringing Montenegro closer to EU membership, strengthening its institutions, the rule of law, the fight against corruption, the development of a stable economy and the protection of human rights”, the press release said.
Milatovic recalled that at the European Political Community Summit in Copenhagen, he launched the initiative for drafting of Montenegro’s Accession Treaty, as proof of the country’s readiness to complete the job.
“It’s time to finish the job. It’s time for Montenegro to become a strong and European country. By starting the drafting of the accession treaty, we would send a clear message that we reaffirm our European ambitions with actions, not words”, said Milatovic.
He stressed that Montenegro’s goal is to complete the accession talks by 2026, and to become the next member by 2028.
“Through Montenegro’s example, the enlargement policy will once again confirm that it is the EU’s most successful, the one that rewards work, reforms and results”, Milatovic added.
The press release concludes that von der Leyen’s visit reaffirms strong support for Montenegro’s European perspective.
