Podgorica, (MINA) – The Government of Montenegro should consider this week the initiative, first announced last year, to declare July 11 the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Srebrenica Genocide, the cabinet of the Minister for Human and Minority Rights Fatmir Gjeka told Vijesti daily.
The Ministry of Human and Minority Rights prepared the initiative, while Montenegro had already committed to establishing the Day of Remembrance.
In 2021, the Parliament adopted the Resolution on the Genocide in Srebrenica, which condemned the crime and prohibited its denial. Article 5 of the resolution prescribes for July 11 be designated as the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of that crime.
At the end of May 2024, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming July 11 the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the Genocide in Srebrenica.
Montenegro voted in favor of the resolution and its amendment was accepted, clarifying that “responsibility for genocide under international law is individualized and cannot be attributed to any ethnic, religious or any other group”.
