Montenegro should not bask in praises

Podgorica, (MINA) – Montenegro has shown exceptional readiness for reforms on the path towards the EU, being the leader in meeting the requirements, however it should not bask in the praises, but work on “selling’ itself as the most desirable candidate, said Croatian MP in the European Parliament Zeljana Zovko.

Regarding the European integration, Zovko said that Montenegro is the best candidate at the moment but that the situation could change overnight.

“It is not good to bet easily basked in the praises since we know well that if the reforms slow down, if we do not communicate working on the reforms to the public, if we do not have feedback from the centers deciding about the enlargement, and those are Berlin and Paris, the situation can change”, Zovko told Mina.

She said that EP representatives need help from the candidate countries in public discourse, media space and reaching compromise with all parts of society, to explain that it is an advanced society and ready to accept necessary changes.

According to Zovko, Montenegro as a tourist destination, knows well how to sell itself as the most desirable candidate, to be integrated in the EU as soon as possible.

“Croatia has the longest border it shares with the part of the South East Europe countries which are not the member states and which are under other influences”, said Zovko.

She expressed hope that Manfred Weber, who is the European People’s Party parliamentary group chair, will be the next European Commission president, to which Zovko also belongs, claiming that he has sensibility for further enlargement priorities.

Zovko said that some countries fear enlargement since the progress is not well communicated in the EU aspiring countries.

She remarked that the EU is the biggest contributor to the development and consolidation of the institutions, but that this is not that obvious for the public in those countries, who are not aware of what can happen if the reforms the EU requests are not fulfilled, and emphasized that communication must be mutual.

Commenting on the fact that the Montenegrin parliament does not work in its full capacity since its constituting, Zovko said that the boycott does not sell anywhere. Longer version of article is available on a link MINA ENGLISH SERVIS
