Podgorica, (MINA) – The relationship between Montenegro and Serbia are the best the two countries have ever had as independent states, Minister of Foreign Affairs Srdjan Darmanovic has said, adding that good neighborhood policy serves Montenegro’s national interests.
According to the Foreign Minister, relations with neighbors are one of the three pillars of Montenegro’s foreign policy.
“We believe in good neighborhood policy because it serves our national interests. Our relations are very good and the best and most stable since the two countries became independent,” Darmanovic said, adding that there are differences that the two countries are not hiding.
“We are a member of NATO and Serbia doesn’t want to become one. However, the key course of our bilateral relations is good,” Darmanovic noted.
Asked if the forthcoming resolution about the historical Podgorica Assembly could affect the relations with Serbia, he replied that this was Montenegro’s internal issue.
“In the end, that’s history. I don’t see why today’s Serbia would identify with that. And we need to deal with our internal issues ourselves,” Darmanovic said.
Presenting the key foreign policy achievements in the first two years of government, the MFA recalled that in this government’s term Montenegro became a member of NATO.
“Apart from gaining security guarantees and international prominence, we have also created preconditions for quicker economic development. We are already feeling positive effects in terms of the growth of foreign direct investment, which increased 2.5 times when it comes to NATO member states in the first six months of this year, compared to the same period last year,” Darmanovic stated.
