Radulovic: Seafarers are ambassadors of Montenegro and key to global trade

Kotor, (MINA-BUSINESS) – Minister of Maritime Affairs and Coordinator of the Ministry of Transport Filip Radulovic said that, as a country with a rich maritime tradition, Montenegro remains committed to investing in maritime education, navigation safety, innovation and international cooperation.

On the occasion of 25 June, the International Day of the Seafarer, Radulovic said the day provides an opportunity to recognize the women and men whose professionalism, dedication and sense of responsibility ensure the smooth functioning of global trade and the connection of economies around the world.

“More than 80 per cent of global trade is carried by sea. Behind every shipment that reaches its destination, every connected market and every port are seafarers whose work often goes unnoticed, yet is crucial to the functioning of the modern world,” Radulovic said.

This year’s theme, designated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) – “Carrying world trade. Carrying the risks” – highlights the key role seafarers play in maintaining global supply chains, as well as the challenges they face on a daily basis

The event marking the International Day of the Seafarer was held aboard the MSC Armonia in Kotor and brought together representatives of domestic and international institutions, the maritime industry, academia, international organizations and seafarers. Among the participants was the Executive Director of the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), Maja Markovcic Kostelac, who emphasized the significance of this year’s theme.

“Here in Montenegro, we continue to support efforts toward EU accession by strengthening the capacities of the competent maritime authorities to align with the EU acquis,” Markovcic Kostelac said.

According to her, this support is particularly important in areas relating to seafarers because it contributes to improving systems for their education, training and certification, as well as administrative oversight.

Radulovic expressed special gratitude to all Montenegrin seafarers for their contribution, sacrifice and professionalism, wishing them safe voyages and successful returns to their families.

“Seafarers are ambassadors of our maritime tradition around the world. Their work, knowledge and dedication are a source of pride for Montenegro and an inspiration for future generations of maritime professionals,” Radulovic said.
