Milatovic: Right to work-free Sundays must be guaranteed by the Constitution

Podgorica, (MINA-BUSINESS) – The right to work-free Sundays must be guaranteed by the Constitution, President Jakov Milatovic said, announcing that on Monday he will propose to Parliament that the already guaranteed constitutional rights of employees be further expanded to include the right to work-free Sundays and public holidays.

According to a press release from his Office, Milatovic expressed concern over the fact that tens of thousands of workers who have enjoyed the right to a work-free Sundays and public holidays over the past seven years will be deprived of that right.

He said that the decision of the Constitutional Court and the reasoning provided therein must serve as guidance for all decision-makers regarding the direction in which they should act, in order to re-establish the abolished right to work-free Sundays and public holidays in a permanent and sustainable manner within the constitutional and legal system.

“Ad hoc legislative solutions, which are known in advance to be vulnerable to repeal by the Constitutional Court, merely extinguish the current fire, only for it to flare up again in a matter of days,” Milatovic said in the press release.

He added that, therefore, he will propose on Monday to the Parliament of Montenegro that the already guaranteed constitutional rights of employees be further expanded to include the right to work-free Sundays and public holidays.
