Podgorica, (MINA) - The declaration on improving the safety of female journalists in the Western Balkans was signed by 360 journalists’ associations, trade unions, media outlets, public institutions, civil society organizations, as well as individual journalists and experts from the region, the Montenegrin Media Trade Union announced.
This association stated that the Declaration was initiated by the SafeJournalists network with the aim of creating a safe and stimulating environment for female journalists across the region.
It is noted that the signatories recognized that the safety of female journalists is a key requirement for protecting freedom of expression, strengthening democracy and guaranteeing citizens’ right to information.
The text of the Declaration points out that female journalists across the region continue to face disproportionate risks, including online harassment, physical intimidation, workplace discrimination and gender-based violence.
The document outlines the obligations of state institutions which include harmonizing the national legislation with the standards of the United Nations, the EU and the Council of Europe, strengthening the capacities of law enforcement authorities and the judiciary, and ensuring effective institutional responses.
