Culafic: New Environmental Protection Law strengthens system in Montenegro

Podgorica, (MINA) – The Draft Law on Environmental Protection was prepared and agreed upon following consultation with all relevant authorities and was submitted to the European Commission for further review, said Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Development of the North, Damjan Culafic.

He stressed that the draft law is fully aligned with the current EU regulations, as well as with the relevant European directives and international obligations in the field of environmental protection.

According to the press release from the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Development of the North (MERS), Culafic emphasized that the Draft Law significantly strengthens Montenegro’s environmental protection system compared to the existing law from 2016.

The press release notes that a stricter, clearer and harmonized environmental protection framework is being introduced in line with European standards.

“With a focus on preserving biodiversity, strengthening the ecological network and improving the sustainable management of natural resources, with a significantly stronger role of local governments within the overall protection system”, the press release adds.
