Podgorica, (MINA) – President of Montenegro Jakov Milatovic has submitted an initiative to Podgorica Mayor Sasa Mujovic to erect a memorial to Montenegrin independence in the Capital City.

According to Milatovic’s office, this is one of the activities within the president’s program marking the 20th anniversary of the restoration of Montenegro’s independence, with the aim of giving Podgorica a landmark that will permanently testify to the country’s continuity, libertarian tradition and European future.

“This memorial should not only commemorate 20 years of restored independence, but the historical aspiration of our people to shape their destiny independently”, stated Milatovic in the initiative.

He pointed out that he was launching this initiative at the time of important historical anniversaries, including 230 years since the battles on Martinici and Krusi, as well as 150 years since the battles of Vucji dol and Fundina, which represent the famous pages of the Montenegrin struggle for freedom, statehood and dignity.

Milatovic emphasized that Montenegro is building its European future on those values, which is why the erection of the memorial would be of particular importance in the run-up to 2028, when the country plans to become a full member of the European Union (EU).
