McGrath: Law on Human Rights Protector to be adopted as soon as possible

Podgorica, (MINA) – The adoption of a new Law on the Human Rights and Freedoms Protector should be accelerated, in order to strengthen the financial, operational and institutional independence of that institution, European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice and the Rule of Law Michael McGrath has said.

The Institution of the Human Rights and Freedoms Protector announced that Ombudsman Sinisa Bjekovic and his deputy Tatjana Radovic Todorovic met during a working lunch with McGrath.

According to the press release, the meeting with the EU Commissioner was a confirmation of the importance of strengthening the institution of the Protector, in the context of Montenegro’s EU accession process.

“McGrath noted the importance of speeding up the process of adoption of the new Law on the Human Rights and Freedoms Protector of Montenegro, with the aim of strengthening the institution’s financial, operational and institutional independence”, the press release says.
