New legislative proposal on Sunday trading ban announced

New legislative proposal on Sunday trading ban announced

Podgorica, (MINA-BUSINESS) – Democratic Montenegro will propose or support a new legislative initiative on the work-free Sundays, in line with the recommendations of the Constitutional Court, as they said they will not allow workers to be exploited.

“The decision clearly pointed to the shortcomings of the previous legislation: there must be a clear legitimate aim in the public interest, the measure must be proportional, and the rules must be equal for all, without selective exceptions that place some in a privileged position and others at a disadvantage,” President of the Parliamentary Group and Secretary General of the Democrats Boris Bogdanovic stated in a press release.

Earlier today, the Constitutional Court abolished as unconstitutional Article 35a of the Law on Internal Trade, which introduced a ban on Sunday trading.

Bogdanovic said that the new legislation will therefore be based on three solid principles: protection of workers’ health and dignity, equal treatment of all entrepreneurs in the market, and clear, precise rules applicable in practice.

“The state must not turn a blind eye to pressure and greed that seek to normalize work without rest and reduce workers to disposable goods,” Bogdanovic said.

According to him, Montenegro can and must have a solution that is both constitutionally sustainable and socially just.
